Note on December 2023

My Chinese name is 刘雨晴; I use 散装水泥 as my formal online Chinese alias and 昼 as my Chinese nickname for others to call me on the Internet. I go by Max as my everyday English name, so you can call me either Yuqing Liu or Max Liu. In addition, I also use an online English alias: Dogzone, a name inspired by a creepypasta web novel I read in middle school.

My artworks are driven by my wonder at the enchanted human relationships. This theme stems from a longstanding personal experience that is highly aligned with my life's trajectory. From my intuitive perspective, humans are the ghosts of each other. Since I was born, I have always had a strong interest in understanding others, but through decades of practice, I have found that this instinctive longing is impossible to realize in its entirety. So this fog that separates me from others has become a lingering shadow in my mind and the source of my strong urge to express myself artistically.

As I grew, I gained a deeper and more systematic awareness of the network of relationships with those around me. I have come to realize that the problems that have plagued me for so long have also plagued other individuals, and even all of humanity. On the basis of this perception, I began to read books and participate in hands-on activities, wanting to proactively explore this question. In this process, Husserl's phenomenology inspired me deeply. He argued that this inaccessibility of others that I have experienced originated from the transcendence of the other, a transcendence that guarantees the objectivity of the world. It seems to me that this makes others necessary for us: we need others to defend the authenticity of our world. A paradox arises from this, that is, we are unable to fully understand others while desperately needing them — humans are the guardian ghosts of each other.
