How to stop being a hypersensitive person?

Updated: Apr 14, 2024

, which is not an uncommon situation for young people working in the art industry.

In high school, I used to be hypersensitive. I was very concerned about what others thought of me and the behaviors others displayed towards me. But after going to university, this had improved a lot. In this post, I will share how I improved my mental condition.

1. Accept that you are the same as everyone else

We are just normal people who make stupid mistakes sometimes. What seems like a very conspicuous move to yourself may seem like ordinary behavior to others.

Next time you might try to pay attention to the "mistakes" of non-hypersensitive people and how they cope with them.

2. Set yourself a "stop overthinking" command

Tell yourself that you are the master of your own brain. You should have the ability to control what your brain is thinking. Then turn and focus on something you love, like working or creating. The brain is a single-threaded machine. When it's occupied with one important thing, it doesn't generate those oversensitive thoughts that deeply plague you.

3. Focus on an area that gives you confidence

Everyone has their own area of expertise. Finding your area is the beginning of a life journey. Whenever you feel judged by other people, think about how you can beat those people in your area of expertise. Even if people are actually judging you, their judgments come from the established mindsets that come with the areas they work in. In your area, you use a totally different mindset, and the gossip can't influence you to be successful.

4. Leave people who make you sensitive

Sometimes you're too sensitive not just because of your thinking pattern, but possibly because of the toxic relationships that exist around you. You don't need to be always considerate of others. Allow yourself to hate some of the people who hurt you. Some people are not worth befriending; at the same time, some can be very supportive and caring as friends. Leave the people who make you sensitive and then socialize with friends who really support your feelings.

Sensitivity is not a bad thing. It allows us to empathize with other people's slightest emotions and better stabilize relationships. For artists, it is a vibrant source of creative inspiration. But hypersensitivity can lead to intense internal conflict, which can not only dry up our inspiration but also affect our daily lives in a way of negative. Therefore, it is imperative to keep the sensitivity value within a certain range. I hope that every hypersensitive person can turn sensitivity from a hindrance to life into a powerful aid to creativity.
