The overly empty background makes my game look like a simple demo

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

After developing the shader used for the lights-off mode, I completed the initial scene setup. However, upon reviewing my game scene, I found the background too empty. The plain black background makes the scene look like a simple, technical demo rather than a complete game.

So, I decided to add some content to the background to enrich the visuals. Returning to the game's core theme, "using senses other than vision to help alleviate metaverse exhaustion," I considered this in the background design. If the bird octopus’s goal is to escape the daily metaverse exhaustion, the place she wants to reach should be far from indoor environments, screens, and daily work—a place close to nature in the real world. This brought to mind a trip I took to Zhangye a few months ago. The grassland of Malan flowers at the foot of the Qilian Mountains left a deep impression on me. That scene revitalized my weary spirit. Thus, I decided to recreate this scenery in the game’s background and make it the bird octopus's ultimate destination.

On top of that, I was also impressed by the rainbow I stumbled upon during the trip. It was drizzling that day, and my friend and I climbed a mountain in the rain. When we were halfway up the mountain, the rain stopped. I unconsciously looked into the distance and found a rainbow. I would like to regard the rainbow as a special gift from nature, so I wanted to design it in the end-of-game summary screen.
