I watched a movie called Blind Shaft, which portrays a mining scam and murder incident based on real societal events in China in the late 20th century. Criminal groups would pose as relatives of their victims, apply for mining jobs, then murder the victim in the mine and stage it as an accidental death due to a mining accident. They would then extort compensation from the mine owner, who, in order to avoid the costs and consequences of reporting the accident, would pay the so-called "relatives." This kind of serial mining scam and murder became a dark social phenomenon in China at the time and only began to decrease as the rule of law became more developed.
I believe this story serves as a fitting foundation for Perilous Light. The game's setting revolves around underground landscapes, and the protagonist—the little white vampire—must survive in dark environments, making the mining backdrop an ideal narrative and thematic choice for the character.
Here is the preliminary story:
In the world of Perilous Light, there is a mysterious and dangerous underground cavern known as the "Angels’ Abyss." It’s rumored to be an abandoned, massive mining pit, rich with rare and valuable crystals. It is said that, years ago, this mine was left abandoned after a violent incident. Some of the crystals extracted back then became urban legends in the black market.
One day, a vampire expedition team resolves to investigate. If the legendary crystals truly exist, each member stands to gain a share of the fortune. Reaching the deepest part of the mine, they are shocked to actually find these crystals.
But the moment they remove one, the pitch-black cavern seems to come alive. Fatal light fills the chamber, deadly to vampires. In this critical moment, the team begins to argue over the crystals’ distribution, and tensions escalate into violence—actually driven by the crystals' mental influence. Some vampires kill their companions to claim the crystals for themselves and escape.
When the protagonist awakens from unconsciousness, she discovers she is the only surviving victim. Now, she must find a way out. During her escape, she senses that the mine itself… might be alive.
The entire mine is actually the “body” of Raguel. The crystals represent the angel's will, causing mental instability in those who approach (or symbolize a treasure that is highly tempting but should not be coveted). Years ago, when people on the surface discovered this underground structure, they began mining its crystals. However, due to the crystals’ mental influence, a massive worker conflict ensued, leading to the mine's abandonment. Yet, the legend of the crystals continues to draw explorers. When the protagonist's team touches the crystal, the angel awakens. It won’t allow these “thieves” to leave alive. In the Boss level, the protagonist will directly confront the entity of Raguel.
When the vampire team descends into the mine, the environment is pitch black. As vampires can see in the dark, they have no trouble in investigating. But after the angel awakens and the surroundings light up, the protagonist realizes just how strange the mine truly is—its walls are formed entirely of the angel’s flesh.
